In the past few years, many of us have been switching to remote working and learning, especially in the world of tech. Completing a bootcamp remotely has many benefits, such as avoiding the cost, stress, and time of commuting. However, the state of your study space can make a big difference to your remote learning experience. If you’re taking the leap and tackling a coding bootcamp, even small improvements to your workspace can help you focus better, learn efficiently, and enjoy your time on the bootcamp. Where should you start? Here are some tips to set up your perfect study space.

1. Find a Study Spot

It’s great to have a dedicated space for studying on your coding bootcamp. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy: a desk in the corner of your room or your kitchen table will work! A great space will have:

  • An electrical socket nearby for your laptop (or get an extension cord)
  • Good lighting: natural light is ideal, but a lamp is great too
  • A comfortable chair
  • Enough space for your laptop (and your other supplies)

2. Gather your Supplies

No one wants to realise they’ve left something in the other room in the middle of a lecture. Make sure you have everything you need within reach. This includes:

  • Phone and laptop chargers
  • Earphones (and a webcam if needed)
  • A glass of water or hot drink
  • Optional: pens, notebooks, and sticky notes for old-school notes

3. Minimise Distractions

Home can be full of distractions, whether you’re sharing the space with others or finding it hard to keep yourself accountable on your own. However, identifying what usually distracts you can help you remove it before you even start.

  • Turn off notifications, or put your phone on silent or Do Not Disturb.
  • Set boundaries: Let your family or housemates know when you’re studying. (A little sign on your door can be a simple but effective reminder.)
  • Use focus apps or software, for example to block social media.
  • Tidy your space: Clutter can be distracting, so take a moment to clear your desk before starting.

4. Build a Routine

Consistency is a huge help in remote learning. Establishing a routine helps you easily switch into study mode when you sit at your workspace.

  • Make a schedule - don’t forget to include breaks!
  • Prep the night before, so you have everything ready when you start.
  • Create rituals: repeated habits will remind your brain that it’s time to start (or stop) studying. Start-of-day habits can be making a coffee, setting up your desk, or writing down learning goals. End-of-day habits can be clearing your workspace, going on a walk, or making a to-do list for the next day.

5. Personalise It

Making your space cozy and personal will make it easier to sit down and get to work every day. You can do this with:

  • Decorations: posters, plants, pencil holders, or photos
  • Background music: whatever best helps you focus
  • Sticky notes: to remind you of your goals and progress

6. Adapt as You Go

Every so often, look at your study space and ask yourself what could be improved. Does it need tidying up? Would a cushion make your chair comfier? Maybe you’d even benefit from a little break and studying in a cafe or the library for the day.

A good study environment doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Even with only a few minutes to spare, you can create a comfortable space with everything you need. Having a dedicated study space will help you get into a learning routine, avoid distractions, stay focused, and excel on your coding bootcamp.
