Tips for Part-Time Coding Bootcamp Students
Joining a part-time coding bootcamp is an exciting step towards becoming a software developer. You can learn to code alongside your existing job or responsibilities, without needing to change your whole schedule. However, joining a bootcamp can also feel overwhelming. This is especially the case if you haven’t been in school for a while or aren’t used to working remotely. Don’t worry though, there are some easy ways you can make your studies more manageable and enjoyable.Â
Here are 8 tips to keep in mind during your bootcamp:Â
1. Set Clear Goals
Are you learning to code to start a new career, a personal project, or simply to explore a new passion? When learning something new, there will always be moments where things feel tough. Having a clear goal can help you stay motivated. You can even write it on a sticky note on your desk for an easy reminder.
You can also think of smaller goals for each learning session, like completing 3 katas or learning a new GitHub function, to stay focused and keep track of your progress.
2. Create a Schedule (and Stick to It!)
Don’t get lost between self-study, personal life, and professional and familial responsibilities. Make a weekly schedule, and block out time for your seminars, lectures, and self-study periods. Don’t forget to pencil in breaks too!
You can use tools like Google Calendar, Notion, or an old-fashioned paper planner.Â
Pro tip: Treat your study schedule like non-negotiable appointments. If you wouldn’t skip a meeting with your boss, don’t skip your study time either.
3. Think about your Study Space
Don’t get interrupted mid-flow because you’re missing a pen or your laptop charger! Having a dedicated study space can help you switch into a studying mindset. Keeping your space tidy and having a comfortable chair can also help you stay focused longer.Â
If you’d rather work in a café, make sure you pack everything you need, from headphones to a water bottle. Having a list, like on the notes app of your phone, can help.Â
4. Involve your Community
Let your friends and family know that you’re tackling a coding bootcamp. They’ll know to expect a busier schedule from you, and can help cheer you on and keep you accountable.
You can also get to know your coursemates on your part-time bootcamp. You’ll be progressing alongside each other, so it can be nice to have people to check in with, whether it’s to share your struggles or celebrate together.
5. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
It’s easy to get caught up in wanting to master everything right away. But learning to code, like any new skill, is a process. Even experienced coders are constantly learning new things and referring to documentation as they go along. Rather than pressuring yourself to become an instant expert, take a step back and appreciate how much more you know today than the day or week before.Â
6. Take Care of Yourself
Remember that your health is more important than your productivity. Allow yourself enough time for sleep, exercise, and eating well. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s probably a good time for a break. Something like a short walk or a mindfulness exercise can make a big difference in your well-being.
Northcoders’ pastoral team is also available to help if you need any support or advice.Â
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
One of the advantages of enrolling on a bootcamp is that you don’t have to learn alone. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your tutors or coursemates. On a Northcoders bootcamp, your regular one-on-one check-ins with your mentor are also a perfect time to share any concerns or ask for guidance.Â
8. Celebrate your Achievements
It’s easy to focus on big achievements like your graduation, but don’t forget about all your other milestones! Whether you nailed a tricky concept, created a new project, or had a productive meeting with your mentor, take the time to recognise your accomplishments and celebrate them. Appreciating how far you’ve come will help you stay motivated and help you enjoy your learning experience.Â
Joining a part-time coding bootcamp is a great way to learn to code and start a software development career, and these are some easy ways to make the most of your experience. Set yourself up for success by creating a study schedule, looking after your well-being, and celebrating your progress. Happy coding!
