How did you find your time on the bootcamp?
It’s been intense. It took 12 weeks of single-minded effort. However, Northcoders delivered their part of the bargain in spades. For a start, it’s not just about learning code, although that side of it is excellent. They teach a full technology ecosystem and make it clear how it fits in the bigger picture. Best of all, they provided tremendous assistance in turning me into the full product - a well-rounded, capable future tech employee - and they have the contacts to deliver the opportunities for such people.
What were you doing before the bootcamp and what made you apply?
Before Northcoders, I was teaching in the state sector. I really love teaching kids, but I felt that the challenges were becoming more about negotiating bureaucracy and less about helping children. I had some coding experience and I thought that it would be a route to new challenges.
What was the support like on the course?
As a former teacher, I appreciate that there was great, individual, tailored support from the tutors - but not too much. From the start, there is a clear message that you are on a road to self-sufficiency. At times that is tough, but it is absolutely the right message. However, the teaching staff are never less than extremely approachable, helpful and friendly.
How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?
It really couldn’t have been better. We had presentations from employers during the course, the team forwarded my applications and my much-improved cv. I had an interview within a week of finishing the course and a job offer a couple of days after that.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?
Learning to code is great, and much easier than it ever has been. There is lots of resource out there to help. Northcoders adds lots of experience, knowledge of the tech ecosystem, knowledge of the tech scene in the North West and some really valuable career mentoring work. If you are serious about a tech career, especially if you are a career changer, I think Northcoders really is worth a look.
Anything else you would like to add?
I got a real sense of a company with a purpose, a clear vision of what they want to do and how they want to do it, and that gave me tremendous confidence in them.
