How did you find your time on the bootcamp?
I had a great time at Northcoders. I met some lovely people and learned an astonishing amount in such a short space of time. The support from the tutors is second to none, and they’re always willing to go the extra mile to help you out if you’re struggling with anything.
What were you doing before the bootcamp and what made you apply?
Previously, I was working in the science directorate at Kew Gardens, on a project called Plants of the World online, where I curated, digitised and prepared botanical data for publishing online. I enjoyed the work, my colleagues and the amazing environment, but I felt like I needed a new challenge. I’d been trying to learn how to code by myself and at community groups for a while, but decided it was time to take the plunge and do a full course before changing careers.
What was the support like on the course?
Tutors gave lectures daily to set you up for the current sprint, and were always available afterwards when you were completing the challenges afterwards. My mentor was only a call away if I had any issues that I felt needed going over in more detail, and that was really reassuring.
How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?
The recruitment team set me up with numerous interviews to jobs I had picked out. They talked me through the interview process for each employer, and also helped me decide between different hiring partners when I was offered more than one place.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?
Make sure to use the resources around you - it really helps to attend community courses if there are any nearby, or meetups. Support is necessary!
