How did you find your time on the bootcamp?
Like a full university course condensed into 12 weeks, and so much fun. There was a lot of new concepts and information to take in, but the tuition was excellent and the mentors did a fantastic job explaining everything. The social side was brilliant too - being surrounded by like-minded people gave a really positive vibe to the whole experience, and made it sad to leave!
What were you doing before the bootcamp and what made you apply?
I was working as a senior administrator for a pensions advisory service, and at no point did I wake up and think “I can’t wait to go and perform admin tasks for a finance company today!” I wanted to find something which actually interested me and was engaging. Luckily, my friend told me about the Northcoders course - I looked into it a bit more, attended one of their Introduction to Programming sessions and knew it was right for me.
What was the support like on the course?
Fantastic - if there is anything you don’t comprehend, the teaching staff will help you throughout. They don’t just give you the answers, instead they guide you to the solution, making sure you understand the concepts behind the challenges first.
How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?
The advice given before the course was over was very helpful. Having never worked in the tech industry before, I didn’t know what to expect from interviews/opportunities etc. but was given thorough advice on the topics. However, there were very few NC partners hiring at the time, but advice sought on external companies who were hiring didn’t come through as much.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?
Do NOT give up just because you don’t understand a concept straight away - if you did, you’ll barely get anywhere!
Codecademy and Stack Overflow are your best friends, make sure to use them!
Learn by doing - create projects (even if they are tiny) from step-by-step instructions, and eventually you will be able to make your own ones without tutorials!
