How did you find your time on the bootcamp?
Northcoders was for me a huge leap of faith which quickly became one of the best decisions I’ve made! As soon as the course began, I was amazed how much and how quickly learnt about coding and development (I learnt more about coding in 1 week than I did a 1 month). The Developer Pathway provided me with on-site support to get comfortable with coding concepts and helped me learn how to solve any problems I might face. Through Northcoders I also met some really great people, from the Northcoders team, to the members of my cohort. It was great to work and learn together with an amazing group of people - who I am still great friends with today! After completing Northcoders, I am confident I have made the right career choice.
What were you doing before the bootcamp and what made you apply?
Before Northcoders I was working as a Graduate Project Coordinator for a network of Universities in the Manchester area. Whilst I enjoyed my role and the people I worked with, there was little to no progression or opportunities for development in my current role. I decided that I wanted a career that would challenge me and make sure that I would always be learning. I had always had an interest in coding (after dabbling in some data science at University) and decided to teach myself code in my spare time and attend some local meetups. It was through these meetups I met many Northcoder Graduates who encouraged me to look into the course. Here I am now a Northcoders Graduate myself!
What was the support like on the course?
The teaching team were really supportive, they made lectures fun and were always open to questions. During sprints, a mentors were always on hand when you reached a tricky concept or an error and 1-2-1 meetings with my mentor were really useful to go over particular concepts step by step. What is amazing is that the teaching team have all gone through the course themselves - so they can really relate to what you are going through!
How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?
The careers team were great when searching for jobs. During the last week of Northcoders, I had access to the ‘job board’ and let the team know if there were any jobs I wanted to apply for. The team set up any interviews and checked in with me afterwards to see how they went. After a couple of weeks, I was offered my first job as a Software Developer at a company in Manchester!
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?
I would say if you are curious and even if you are not 100% sure still apply. You never know until you try and it was the Northcoders Entry Challenge that helped me realise that coding was for me. If you are considering learning to code in your spare time, I recommend attending meetups and tech talks, immersing myself in the local tech scene really supported me making the leap to coding full time!
