Connecting the community

Elder Helper is a mobile application that connects elderly people with compassionate helpers eager to lend a helping hand. We came up with this idea in a discussion whilst brainstorming applications that would be helpful. We discussed how elders often require support to navigate daily tasks or find companionship and recognised that it was difficult for them to find reliable assistance. This inspired us to create an application that enables elders to find safe connections that can help them with their tasks. Elder Helper allows elders to log into their user interface to ask for help by posting jobs, whether that be help with shopping or a chat and a cup of tea. Helpers then can log into their user interface and see a map which displays the elder jobs that are in their area. Helpers can then choose and accept the jobs that they wish.

Technologies

We used: React Native, Google Cloud Maps, Expo, Express, PostgreSQL, Node, JavaScript

We chose React Native as we were creating a mobile application, it allowed us to build on our previous knowledge of React whilst also providing a new challenge. We chose PostgreSQL as we wanted to use a relational database to link up our job and user data. It seemed logical to use Express as a lot of our application included using Create Read Update Delete (CRUD) operations. Google maps was simple to integrate with React Native maps and allowed to use features such as polygons, which is why we chose this for our map feature.

Challenges Faced

Learning the new technologies, navigating a large group and how best to work together for eg. team dynamics, time contstraints, organisations of tasks on the Trello board.
