Recruitment and Hiring
Northcoders' Top Tips for Hiring Events
We know that when it comes to preparing for a hiring fair or job event, it can feel daunting and sometimes a lot of pressure to deal with. However, these types of events are really useful for networking and getting your profile known to those who are hiring. We’ve pulled together our top 10 tips for making the most of these events.
1. Prepare
Once you know the businesses that are going to be attending, make sure you spend some time doing your research! What do they do? Is there a particular reason why you feel you would be a good fit to work there? Employers will be able to see the difference in the conversation, even if you only have a basic understanding of who they are.
2. Present yourself well
We’re not suggesting you come wearing a full suit or interview attire, but making sure you are presented well can make a difference.
3. Beware of your body language
Your body language can portray a lot; for example, if you are standing with your arms crossed, it can come over like you are not interested in engaging in a conversation.
4. Have your LinkedIn QR code available
Paper CVs can get lost so easily, and employers don’t fancy carrying lots home with them after the event...get the LinkedIn app and have the QR code ready (Northcoders staff can help you locate it if you need). Make sure your LinkedIn is up to date too!
5. Be ready to give a 1-minute “pitch” about yourself
You don’t need a full presentation with a slide deck; just think about what you want to say about yourself when asked questions like “Tell us about yourself” or “Why do you want to be a developer?” Whilst you aren’t timed, you want to make sure you are succinct. If you think you are rambling; you potentially are. Can you perhaps practise these questions with a friend or family member before the event?
6. Ask questions and listen
Remember employers may give you a really good insight into the company and the role during this event; if you go on to apply for a role, there could be some information that they tell you which you can relay in the application to make it stand out - so pay attention! Think about what you need and want to know about the company and the role, and make sure you ask!
7. Don’t be afraid to ask the Northcoders staff for help or ask for an introduction
We understand it can be overwhelming on the day! If you want to speak to an employer but don’t know where to start, ask one of the staff who can introduce you!
8. Don’t stand in the corner alone!
Don’t gather in groups/circles that stop employers from approaching you - get involved in conversations and if you need help, refer to tip 7! Likewise, there may be people from your cohort you want to catch up with, and that’s great (and encouraged!), but don’t block off access by standing in a huddle as you may miss the chance to speak to an employer as they’re moving about the room.
9. Follow up with employers after the event
Even just a simple message on LinkedIn, such as “It was great to meet you at the event this week...” will help the employer remember who you are and open ongoing conversations.
10. Be confident, but be open-minded!
Try to make the most of the event, and if there is anything we can do to help, please let us know!
