We'll let you in on a not-so-well-kept secret: we're very proud of our team. Why, you ask? Well, not only are they a very talented bunch, they're also (without exception) wonderful, kind and positive people, full of love for what they do and the people whose lives they change.

Mitch is a senior tutor here at Northcoders. We sat down with him recently to get to know him a little bit better. 

How did you become a member of the team?

I started as a Northcoder in Residence (NiR).  Soon afterwards I progressed to becoming a senior tutor on the classroom team.

What got you interested in learning how to code?

I basically love problem solving and always knew that this was one of the biggest elements of coding. After some initial research online I decided that this was the thing for me.

What are the major aspects of what you do?

My job at Northcoders involves looking after a cohort of students on a particular part of The Developer Pathway. At the moment I am a block lead for Back End Two, which means I will deliver lectures to students in the morning and over the course of the day I will check people are progressing with the sprints we set.

In addition, I also write and update lecture notes for the curriculum, taking into account the continual improvements that are being made to the course content.

What do you love most about your job?

Quite simply I just love teaching people.  I love explaining things to people and I love watching them learn and improve throughout the course.  It is always a pleasure to see previous students and ask them how they are getting on in their new job and how far they have come.  One of the privileges of working here means watching this community of amazing new coders continue to grow, and that's amazing, isn't it?

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to learn to code but isn't sure where to get started?

There are tonnes of tutorials available online. However, ultimately you need to get problem solving as soon as possible.  Basically my advice is to get onto somewhere like Code Wars and start tackling katas as soon as possible. The practice of solving problems allows you to develop new coding skills, as well as focusing your mind on how to approach and interpret a new challenge.

Singing in two different choirs at the moment that perform regularly around Greater Manchester.

What makes you happy? 

Seeing my friends makes me really happy. Aside from this I also enjoy new cultural learnings, be it a new film on BFI player or a new song to sing.
