Chef to Junior SDET

Cameron McBurney Preview: Cameron McBurney

What job role have you secured?
I found my first role in automation testing as a Junior SDET.

How did you find your time on the bootcamp?
Throughout my time at Northcoders, I found there wasn't a moment where I wasn't challenging myself and learning. Despite some aspects of the course being quite intimidating as a beginner, the support and resources were always in place to overcome any difficulties. The mentors and staff were always welcoming and supportive, and I personally felt assured that they were all as open to learning and asking questions as we were.

What were you doing before the Bootcamp?
I was working in hospitality as a chef for around 10 years before. It's never too late to pursue something you're interested in!

What made you interested in moving into tech?
A lot of my hobbies revolve around the use of technology. I have a big passion for audio engineering and game design in my free time, so I thought it made sense to develop my skills in an area I could directly apply them to.

What made you choose Northcoders?
Northcoders is local to me in Manchester, but, it was the glowing reviews that swayed me. After experiencing the course, I really understand why people speak so highly of Northcoders.

What was the support like on the course?
The support was great throughout. The team were always approachable and knowledgeable. Clear feedback was given in the areas asked for and in general, the cohort was very supportive of each other too. I think the positive attitude Northcoders fosters is really reflected in the people it attracts!

How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?
The support for CV tailoring, practice interviews, and having dedicated 1-to-1 support from the careers team was great. Although I didn't take advantage of it, the incubator projects Northcoders do in conjunction with other companies seem like really fantastic opportunities!

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?
If you're interested in switching careers and have the time to learn, it's a fantastic opportunity to do so. There will be times when topics are a struggle, but I have no doubts you'll be able to reflect on those moments and see how far you have progressed down the line!
