Graduate Stories
Mechanical Engineer to Software Developer
Ellie's story
Ellie
Software Developer at Arup
How did you find your time on the bootcamp?
I already had great expectations of the course after hearing about it from a friend, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The teachers were amazing and the atmosphere was lovely. It was fun to turn up every day. I almost forgot I was studying!
It definitely lived up to the hype. I was very focused on finding the 'right' job - I really felt they understood what I wanted
What were you doing before the bootcamp and what made you apply?
I was a mechanical engineer. I had never really enjoyed the subject and was looking for a change but I didn't have a clue what to do. I felt my industry was very slow-moving and had poor attitudes to change - you might say they were 'living in the past'. When a friend told me about Northcoders I immediately felt that a coding course was the way forward, and after the Entry Challenge I was 100% convinced.
What was the support like on the course?
I honestly don't know how the tutors all stay so committed. They give you so much time and help, they are all very knowledgeable people. I was very grateful to have that level of support during the course - I certainly used it to its full extent!
How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?
The support was incredible. I was very focused on finding the 'right' job, rather than the first one that came along. The Northcoders staff agreed, I really felt they understood what I wanted and what I'd be suitable for. Although it took two months, I definitely chose the right career for me and I had the support of the Northcoders team the whole way.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?
Learning in your own time can be done, but I'd never recommend it. If you're serious about a job in coding, it is important not only to have learning resources, but to network with others in the industry. It is never a bad idea to invest in your education.
