Process Operator to Web Developer

Scott KellyPreview: Scott Kelly

How did you find your time on the bootcamp?

Although not knowing what to expect when starting Northcoders coming from a manufacturing background. I quickly found everyone to be very welcoming and friendly. Although the first few weeks were tough, it was well worth the struggle by the end. I felt like Northcoders gave me everything I needed to get started on my tech journey.

What were you doing before the Bootcamp?

When I started Northcoders I was a process operator at Egger UK.

What made you interested in moving into Tech?

Having dropped out of university years ago due to life. I was jumping from job to job trying to make the most money I could while also enjoying life still. Working shifts had eventually started to catch up with me and a few members of staff had life-changing accidents which made me re-evaluate where I was working.

Why did you opt for Northcoders specifically?

Northcoders had the best onboarding before the course I had tried another bootcamp before Northcoders however their onboarding was a 10 question quiz to get on the course. Where as Northcoders provided pre-course materials, a platform through slack to interact with other students and feedback on the coding challenges.

What was the support like on the course?

All the mentors are more than willing to help with even the silliest of thing. They were very understanding when I was coming off Nightshift and doing the course on no sleep and even helped me work around when I had to do school runs. It also helps to know they have all been in the same place you are during the course.

How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?

The career advice was amazing having not needed a CV for 8 years and coming from a different background the careers team were willing to help with everything including interview prep.

Do you think that Northcoders prepared you well for a role in tech?

Yes there are obviously some differences between a job and Northcoders but with fundamental coding being taught so well it provides an amazing springboard to keep learning.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?

Just apply there is lots of pre-course support before starting and the mentors will offer their advice if you feel unsure.
