Claims Handler to Software Engineer

Kam Leong ChengPreview: Kam Leong Cheng

How did you find your time on the bootcamp?

I really enjoyed my time at the bootcamp. The teaching standard was excellent, and I learnt a huge amount from the lectures, seminars, solo and pair programming exercises. I loved the inclusive environment, and enjoyed working with those from a wide variety of backgrounds, but who shared similar ambitions.

What were you doing before the Bootcamp and what made you apply?

I had been working as a claims handler in the insurance industry for a number of years. Whilst it was a comfortable existence, I no longer enjoyed the work I was doing. I've always been interested in the world of technology, and when the pandemic came, I spent some time learning to code. This sparked my interest in problem-solving, and once I decided that this was what I wanted to do, I handed in my notice and signed up for the bootcamp!

What was the support like on the course?

The support provided at Northcoders was great. Whenever you were stuck they were available to help, and instead of spoon-feeding you solutions, they made you think about the problem from a different perspective and encouraged you to solve it through research, which was very useful.

How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?

The careers team provided excellent advice and guidance on drafting your CV, cover letters, applications, and online profiles. Without their help, it is unlikely I would have made it through to the interview stages of the jobs I was considered for.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?

Don't delay! There are many great online resources available to begin with, and if you find yourself enjoying the challenge of creating and problem solving, consider enrolling in a bootcamp, as it was the greatest factor in preparing me to being job ready!

Anything else you would like to add?

Northcoders provides an excellent structure to becoming a full-stack developer - it is up to you to put in the hard work and effort to achieving your goal. Don't be afraid to ask for help, because no one knows everything, and try to enjoy the process - you will get there in the end!
