Teacher to Delivery Consultant

Phil WaltonPreview: Phil Walton

How did you find your time on the bootcamp?

The NorthCoders bootcamp was exhilarating, demanding and rewarding, every single sprint-filled day. I came into it thinking I'd pick up a skill but left having picked up a passion. The tutors are so I tune with what you need - not holding your hand as such, but giving you the push to do more than you thought you could, right from day one. It was organised, professional, and fun, always skirting that Goldilocks zone between enjoyment and struggle. If you want to learn, you will love this course.

What were you doing before the Bootcamp and what made you apply?

I was a teacher and middle leader for 12 years. During the pandemic, I just had this gnawing feeling I could do more with the analytical, problem-solving side of my brain and I always have loved building and making things. I eventually decided to take the plunge and taught myself some basic computer science, before starting with NorthCoders a couple of months later.

What was the support like on the course?

The support mainly comes in the form of high-quality teaching and semi-interactive seminars (although the team are also there to point you in the right direction if you get stuck). They combine encouragement and positivity with grounded realism and know-how. By the end I felt like they were teaching me to teach myself.

How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?

I was given some support with cv-writing (particularly useful when new to such a technical industry), linked-in, cover letters and interview preparation.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?

NorthCoders are a rare thing - a top-quality teaching and learning provider that is also totally fun and unthreatening. Anyone with belief in themselves and a desire to learn to code should apply.
